April 6
Dear St. John Students and Parents,
I hope that this email finds you all well during this unique and challenging time. Adjusting to life indoors is not easy for children or adults; the realities of working from home, keeping little hands and minds busy, and keeping everyone’s spirits up are tough tasks. Know that we recognize that this is hard on our school community and personal families and we are here to support one another. Please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher or to me should you need anything at all.
You have been receiving many communications directly from the board and from your classroom teachers over the last few days with updates on school closures and learning from home. There is a lot of information to digest and process and we are here to support you as we navigate this new reality. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
Starting this week, classroom and program specialty teachers will begin providing your children with materials and work for distance learning. Over the last few weeks, St. John staff have met frequently online to support each other as we prepare for this. The teachers have worked very hard and are to be commended for their level of professionalism, commitment and collaboration as they prepare lessons and activities for your children. We miss being in our classrooms with your children and would prefer to be back at school but understand the necessity for distance learning.
Some of you have asked about supporting those who may find themselves newly financially challenged as a result of recent events. The TCDSB’s charitable organization, The Angel Foundation for Learning (AFL), is accepting donations to support newly formed financial supports aimed to ensure that families are fed and cared for. If you are in a position to help, donations are being accepted via the Canada Helps platform to assist this relief effort (CLICK HERE). You will have the option to direct your funds to either the AFL’s new FOOD FOR KIDS! student home nutrition grocery food card program, or the AFL Social Work Emergency Fund (SWEF). For more information. An electronic charitable tax receipt will be provided.
During this time, it is difficult to feel like we are a school community while in our individual homes. To build on our strong school spirit, we are inviting families to participate in weekly challenges that show our school spirit. Each week, we ask families to take on the specific challenge, take a photo of the completed challenge and send the photo so it can be posted on our school Twitter and Instagram accounts. This is our little way of making us feel like we are together in spirit.
This week’s challenge invites students and parents to create a rainbow, a symbol of hope during this pandemic. Take a photo of the completed rainbow hanging in a room, window or porch / yard. We ask that you submit the photo to Ms. Horbay by Thursday April 9th. Next week, a new challenge will be sent to you. If you are not yet following St. John on Twitter or Instagram, you are encouraged to do so.

On a final note as we begin Holy Week, on behalf of all St. John staff, we wish you all a peaceful and hopeful Easter. Parents, if you are working on the frontlines to help us, we thank you for your dedication and we have you in our thoughts and prayers.
Stay safe and stay well.
