April 27, 2020
Dear Students and Families:
We have just learned that the Provincial Government has extended school closures until at least May 31, 2020 to ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff.
The Ministry has also announced that secondary examination days will be transitioned into instructional days. This means that final assessments in the form of exams will not take place this semester and that culminating assignments/tasks will be assigned instead. More information will be provided in the weeks ahead.
Enhanced public health measures, including staying home and physically distancing from each other, are working to contain the spread of the virus and flatten the curve. As such, the Chief Medical Officer of Health says emergency measures must remain in place to continue reducing the number of cases and deaths.
While we recognize that this may not have been the news you were hoping for, we are optimistic that our collective efforts are working to save lives. We appreciate the continued commitment of our healthcare professionals who are caring for those who are ill, and to all the frontline workers maintaining essential services for all of us.
Please be assured that distance learning will continue throughout the school closures. We encourage students and families to reach out to their teacher(s) or to the school Principal with any concerns/ questions they may have about learning tasks, assignments, evaluation and assessment. Families are reminded to make sure the school has correct contact information (phone and email) on file for your child(ren) so that you can continue to receive updates. Please also note that when your child’s teacher(s) or principal contacts you, they will be using a blocked number. Supplementary learning resources are posted on the website.
As you are aware from previous communications, the Board has been delivering devices to families who do not have access to technology devices or internet at home. Any family who has not already confirmed their child’s need with their local school is encouraged to reach out to the school principal directly.
Given the extended school closure, all May events will be cancelled. Where possible, some events and meetings will continue virtually. Please visit our website www.tcdsb.org for more information.
We recognize the challenges that our students and families continue to face as we navigate these unprecedented times together. Know that all of us at the TCDSB remain committed to student success and well-being, and we will continue to work through these challenges with you.
We will continue to keep you informed about any further decisions by the Provincial Government. In the meantime, we wish you continued health, and look forward to a time when we can return to our schools and offices.
Sincerely
Rory McGuckin
